Gute Musik. Reicht doch. WELTWOCHE

Muthspiel uses the possibilities offered by the material, the harmonic and instrumental colour available, and the diverse musical personalities in the sextet, with a sure sense of what he’s about. Order, beauty and deftly judged slash-and-burn are shrewdly contrasted and made part of the whole canvas from the opening Der Mai-Jodler on. What all the tunes have in common is consistently high-calibre soloing, both “inside” and “outside”, and ensembles, written or improvised, that are extraordinarily cohesive and beautifully played. Iconoclasm is all very well, but the only image being shattered here is the touristic yodel stereotype. There’s not a piece of lederhosen in sight. Or a cuckoo clock. THE IRISH TIMES

Yodelling takes on a different quality when freed from the touristic stereotype. It shakes off the picturesque or burlesque and becomes something authentic and original, not just an acoustic curiosity. Seen in this way, yodelling is a vocal art form which performs much the same function as flamenco for the Spanish and yoik for the Sami. The Muthspiel family has nurtured the jodel, which their father collected , publicized, composed and performed complete with choruses. And now his son is presenting yodelling in a whole new connection. Christian Muthspiel’s Yodel Group began as a commissioned project for the Saalfelden 2009 Jazz Festival, where this music was heard for the first time. It was immediately clear that this would not be limited to the one unique event. After all, this was a venture involving two experienced form-anarchists of the New York scene, two luminaries of the Franco-Swiss avantgarde and two Austrian free-thinkers, in a joint effort to transcend the pan-Atlantic stylistic clichés. The result was a compendium of cultural crossroads in which the principles of yodelling gave new direction to existing melodies from various sources. Here musicians representing a distinctive European rural tradition meet eye-to-eye with their urban American counterparts in a collaboration that is self-confident, courageous and creative, which shows just how well such a daring project can work.
